diglossia and bilingualism

These two terms are widely used in sociolinguistics. For the sake of clarification, I brought to you, dear reader, these terms to make you aware of the difference between them. The term diglossia is used to describe the situation of languages where there is a competition between the highly sophisticated and codified language and its variety spoken widely in everyday life. That means that each variety has its own roles and functions. For instance, we have Classical Arabic that is the old language of Arabs and Koran, Standard Arabic that is the one we use in school, lectures and conferences, etc and Moroccan Arabic that is spoken widely in every day life and considered to be the lingua franca of Morocco. According to Ferguason, the sophisticated language is called High and the widely spoken variety is Low to show the contrast between them. This is in brief for diglossia. On the other hand, we have bilingualism that is quite different because it refers to the use of two different languages like French and Arabic, for example. This is usually found in countries occupied by another country like the situation in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, where French is used side by side with Arabic in different sectors. Sometimes, we find multilingualism in some countries like Morocco, where Classical Arabic, Standard Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, Berber, French and even Spanish in small scale are all used. In general, Morocco is one of the countries where diglossia and bilingualism are found together, and this shows how awesome is our country and how many cultures are in it living in peace for a long time in comparison with some other countries in all over the world.
